Locked in

On Thursday the 19th, we started our drive up to Baker City Oregon. We left around 4 and drove up to Cory and Shanon's house in Mountain Home. We spent the night there that night and had a great time chatting with Cory and Shanon. Cory had to be into work early so Sean and I got up with Maia and got ready to make it the rest of the way home.

Sean stopped by Idaho State's campus in Meridian to talk to one of his old professors about a paper they were going to work on together. While he was doing that, I went to visit Kristin, a friend from high school, that worked in the same building. Maia didn't care much for the talking she just wanted to run around and work on her stair climbing skills. Lets just say her hands were a little dirty after this.

Once I got Maia all bundled up again and ready to go we headed out to the car to go visit some other people. While I was buckling Maia into the car seat, she had gotten a hold of the keys to the car and was playing with the buttons. I didn't think much of it as I had the door open and with our car the doors wont lock if one is open. When she hit the panic button I took the keys from her and tossed them into the front seat. I finished buckling her, covered her with a blanket, since it was like 17 degrees out and then closed the door and headed to the front. As I reached the drivers door I realized that all the doors had locked and Maia was locked into the car!

I started to freak out a little bit because I wasn't sure what to do. I was in a rental car and I couldn't reach Sean because his phone doesn't get service in that building. I ended up calling 911 and they sent a police officer out to make sure everything was okay and they called a lock smith to come unlock the car. Poor Maia wasn't too happy with the fact that she was locked into her car seat and the car wasn't moving. She could see me dancing out side to keep her entertained and to keep warm.

When the police officer got there, he asked me what happened and then proceeded to tell me that I should get a hide-a-key or something so this wouldn't happen again. I told him that it was a rental and that I wasn't planning on letting it happen. He said "Oh it's a rental! Well good because that car's color is awful." I would agree with him that the color wasn't great but that wasn't really something that was concerned with at the time.

We waited for about 30 min and then the locksmith showed up and started working to get the car open. He wasn't able to do it the traditional way so he had to make a key for the car. He was very nice and very professional about it. I still find it fascinating that they can make a key for a car with out having a key to shape it after. The the nicest thing happened, he got the car open and told me that since my daughter was in there, he wasn't going to charge me to open it. It was a Christmas blessing for sure!

It all turned out well in the end and Maia eventually forgave me for the incident but I have to say there is nothing more worry some then sitting on the outside looking in and not being able to comfort your child.

Once we got the car open and everything settled, Maia and I went to visit another friend from high school, Allison, and then we got gas and pick Sean back up. My other plans were foiled by the lock out but that was understandable. We stopped by my old work to say hi and to see how much things had changed. Then we were off to visit more friends in Nampa. We saw our old bishop and his wife and then went to see the Devon and Cortney Limb. It was so good to see both of those families and catch up a bit.

After all the visiting was done, we headed off to Baker City. What should have been a 2 hour drive turned into about a 4 hour drive because of the snow. We got caught in a really bad snow storm and the roads were just slow and visibility was very low. I'm grateful that Sean is such a good driver and that we could work together to get to my parents home safely.

I have to say that this day was quite the day. It was emotionally and physically exhausting and made us all very glad to be in Baker safe and sound.
